1. Introduction
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has opened online applications for 350 Probationary Engineer posts in E-II Grade under Advertisement No. 17556/HR/All-India/2026, dated 28 October 2026. The posts are split between 200 Probationary Engineer (Electronics) and 150 Probationary Engineer (Mechanical) vacancies, and both figures include backlog seats. The application window runs from 28 October 2026 (2:00 PM) to 18 November 2026 (11:59 PM), and the Computer Based Test (CBT) is tentatively scheduled for 22 December 2026.
This is one of the largest direct-entry engineer intakes in India's defence PSU sector. Selected candidates join at a basic pay of ₹40,000 in the ₹40,000–3%–₹1,40,000 scale, with BEL quoting an approximate cost-to-company of ₹13 lakh per year. The pay scale itself is due for revision with effect from 1 January 2027, which means this batch will likely join just as the revised structure takes effect.
Most coverage of this notification stops at the vacancy table and the fee. This guide goes further: it works out the exact birth-date cut-offs for every category, estimates how many candidates will be called for interview, explains the scoring maths of the negative marking, and flags the internal contradiction in the notification about the EWS fee. It also lists the less obvious conditions that quietly end candidatures at document verification.
Editorial Note: This article is prepared by the Vacancy Vedika Editorial Team from the official BEL notification (Advt. No. 17556/HR/All-India/2026). Figures marked as estimates are our own calculations from the notification's rules, not numbers published by BEL. Any corrigendum or date extension will be posted only in the Careers section of the BEL website, so check there before you pay the fee or submit the form.

For a Probationary Engineer, this product spread matters practically. Electronics engineers are typically absorbed into design, production, testing and quality functions for radar, communication and EW systems. Mechanical engineers work on enclosures, precision fabrication, thermal management and production engineering for the same platforms. The notification states that these openings are for Production and Support Services departments, so candidates should expect shop-floor and production-linked roles at the start rather than pure R&D.

4. Vacancy Details
BEL has notified 350 vacancies: 200 in Electronics (57%) and 150 in Mechanical (43%). Management may increase or decrease these numbers at the time of recruitment.
Category-Wise Vacancy Distribution
| Post / Grade | UR | EWS | OBC (NCL) | SC | ST | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Probationary Engineer (Electronics), E-II | 81 | 20 | 54 | 30 | 15 | 200 |
| Probationary Engineer (Mechanical), E-II | 62 | 15 | 40 | 22 | 11 | 150 |
| Grand Total | 143 | 35 | 94 | 52 | 26 | 350 |
PwBD Vacancies (Horizontal Reservation)
PwBD seats are horizontal, which means they sit inside the category totals above rather than being added on top. Each post carries a fresh PwBD quota plus a backlog carried over from earlier cycles.
| Post | Fresh PwBD | PwBD Backlog | Cat. A (LV) | Cat. B (D, HH) | Cat. C (Locomotor etc.) | Cat. D (SLD, MI etc.) | Cat. E (MD) | Total PwBD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electronics | 7 | 20 | 8 | 8 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 27 |
| Mechanical | 6 | 12 | 5 | 5 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 18 |
| Total | 13 | 32 | 13 | 13 | 5 | 7 | 7 | 45 |
Two details are easy to miss. First, the backlog (32 seats) is more than double the fresh PwBD quota (13 seats), so PwBD candidates face noticeably better seat availability in this cycle than the fresh numbers suggest. Second, the identified disabilities differ by discipline. Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Both Legs (BL) are listed as suitable only for Electronics, while Autism Spectrum Disorder (Mild) is listed only for Mechanical.
| Sub-Category | Electronics — Suitable Disabilities | Mechanical — Suitable Disabilities |
|---|---|---|
| A | LV (Low Vision) | LV (Low Vision) |
| B | D (Deaf), HH (Hard of Hearing) | D (Deaf), HH (Hard of Hearing) |
| C | OA, BA, OL, BL, CP, LC, Dw, AAV | OA, BA, OL, LC, Dw, AAV |
| D | SLD, MI | ASD (Mild), SLD, MI |
| E | Multiple Disabilities involving A to D | Multiple Disabilities involving A to D |
Abbreviations: OA = One Arm, BA = Both Arms, OL = One Leg, BL = Both Legs, CP = Cerebral Palsy, LC = Leprosy Cured, Dw = Dwarfism, AAV = Acid Attack Victims, SLD = Specific Learning Disability, MI = Mental Illness.
We have prepared a BEL Probationary Engineer Vacancy Breakdown 2026 that maps every category seat to its PwBD sub-category share and compares this intake against earlier BEL PE cycles.5. Eligibility Criteria
Candidates need a four-year B.E / B.Tech / B.Sc (Engineering) degree in the exact listed disciplines from an AICTE-approved college. UR, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates need First Class, while SC, ST and PwBD candidates need only a Pass Class. Only Indian nationals may apply.
Probationary Engineer (Electronics)
- B.E / B.Tech / B.Sc (4-year) Engineering
- Accepted branches: Electronics; Electronics & Communication; Electronics & Telecommunication; Communication; Telecommunication
- First Class for UR / OBC (NCL) / EWS
- Pass Class for SC / ST / PwBD
- AMIE / AMIETE / GIETE in the above branches also accepted (First Class)
Probationary Engineer (Mechanical)
- B.E / B.Tech / B.Sc (4-year) Engineering
- Accepted branch: Mechanical only
- First Class for UR / OBC (NCL) / EWS
- Pass Class for SC / ST / PwBD
- AMIE in Mechanical also accepted (First Class)
Branch-Name Rules That Reject Applications
BEL applies the branch list literally. The notification states that other equivalent disciplines and dual specialisations will not be considered, and that candidates whose degree certificate shows a specialisation that does not match the branch chosen in the application will not be called for interview.
| Degree Shown on Certificate | Likely Status | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| B.Tech Electronics & Communication Engineering | Eligible (Electronics) | Listed branch |
| B.E Electronics & Telecommunication | Eligible (Electronics) | Listed branch |
| B.Tech Electrical & Electronics (EEE) | Not eligible | Not in the listed branches; equivalents excluded |
| B.Tech Electronics & Instrumentation | Not eligible | Not in the listed branches |
| B.Tech Mechanical & Automation / Mechatronics | Not eligible | Only "Mechanical" is listed; dual specialisations excluded |
| B.E Mechanical Engineering | Eligible (Mechanical) | Listed branch |
CGPA Holders: Conversion Certificate Is Mandatory
If your university awards CGPA, GPI or SGPA instead of percentage, First Class is judged on the equivalent percentage using your own university's conversion formula, not a generic multiplier. You must produce the official conversion certificate or formula document at the interview stage. The notification says failure to submit it leads to disqualification, even after clearing the CBT.
Pro Tip: Request the CGPA-to-percentage conversion certificate from your university now. Many universities take two to four weeks to issue it, and the interview call may come only a few weeks after the CBT on 22 December 2026.
6. Age Limit & Relaxation
The upper age limit is 25 years for UR/EWS candidates as on 1 October 2026. Relaxation is 3 years for OBC (NCL), 5 years for SC/ST, 10 years for PwBD and 5 years for Ex-Servicemen. PwBD relaxation stacks on top of the caste relaxation.
| Category | Relaxation | Maximum Age (as on 01.10.2026) | Born On or After* |
|---|---|---|---|
| UR / EWS | — | 25 years | 2 October 2000 |
| OBC (NCL) | 3 years | 28 years | 2 October 1997 |
| SC / ST | 5 years | 30 years | 2 October 1995 |
| Ex-Servicemen (UR) | 5 years (as per Govt. guidelines) | 30 years | 2 October 1995 |
| PwBD (UR / EWS) | 10 years | 35 years | 2 October 1990 |
| PwBD + OBC (NCL) | 13 years | 38 years | 2 October 1987 |
| PwBD + SC / ST | 15 years | 40 years | 2 October 1985 |
*Our calculation assumes the common PSU reading that a candidate is within the limit until the day before their next birthday. Under that reading, a UR candidate born on 2 October 2000 is 25 years and 364 days old on 1 October 2026 and remains eligible. BEL does not spell out the convention, so confirm your eligibility against the date-of-birth validation on the application portal before paying the fee.
Proof of Age
Only the Matriculation or Higher Secondary certificate issued by a Board of Secondary Education is accepted as proof of age. A birth certificate from a competent authority is considered only if the school certificate does not mention the date of birth. Aadhaar and similar documents are not listed as acceptable proof of age.
Certificate Validity Windows
| Category | Certificate Condition |
|---|---|
| OBC (NCL) | Central-list format for GoI/CPSU posts, issued on or after 1 October 2025; caste name must match the Central List spelling exactly; creamy layer must apply as UR |
| EWS | Income & Asset Certificate based on FY 2025-26 income, issued on or after 1 April 2026; photo pasted, signed and stamped by the issuing authority |
| SC / ST | Caste or tribe must be in the Central List for the state; latest GoI format with date of issue and caste name |
| PwBD | Minimum 40% disability; latest format for the relevant disability; "likely to improve" temporary disabilities are not eligible |
| Ex-Servicemen | Annexure-3 in the prescribed format, signed by the competent authority |
7. Salary & Remuneration
A BEL Probationary Engineer in E-II Grade starts at a basic pay of ₹40,000 per month in the ₹40,000–3%–₹1,40,000 scale, with an approximate CTC of ₹13 lakh per year as stated by BEL.
Pay Structure
What Makes Up the CTC
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Basic Pay | ₹40,000 per month at entry |
| Dearness Allowance (DA) | Industrial DA pattern applicable to CPSEs, revised periodically |
| House Rent Allowance (HRA) | As per company rules, depending on posting city |
| Conveyance Allowance | As per company rules |
| Performance Related Pay (PRP) | Linked to individual and company performance |
| Medical Reimbursement | As admissible under company policy |
| Other Perquisites | As admissible (cafeteria-style perks, superannuation benefits, etc.) |
Monthly, the stated CTC works out to roughly ₹1.08 lakh. Actual take-home pay will be lower because CTC includes employer contributions and performance pay, and because income tax and PF are deducted. The pending revision from 1 January 2027 matters here: if a new pay scale is notified, BEL's entry-grade basic for this batch could be refixed upward. Until BEL announces the revised scale, treat the ₹40,000 basic and ₹13 lakh CTC as the working figures.
Note: The Probationary Engineer designation is followed by a 6-month orientation and on-the-job training period. Candidates should confirm with the offer letter whether full E-II emoluments apply from day one of training, as the notification does not address this separately.
8. Application Fee
The fee is ₹1,180 (₹1,000 + 18% GST) for UR, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates according to Section 9 of the notification. SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen candidates pay nothing. Payment is online only, through the SBI e-Pay Lite gateway, and the fee is non-refundable.
| Category | Fee (per Section 9 & FAQ) |
|---|---|
| General / UR | ₹1,180 |
| OBC (NCL) | ₹1,180 |
| EWS | ₹1,180 (see contradiction note below) |
| SC | Nil |
| ST | Nil |
| PwBD | Nil |
| Ex-Servicemen (ESM) | Nil |
The EWS Fee Contradiction
The notification contradicts itself on EWS. Section 9 and the FAQ table both say EWS candidates pay ₹1,180. However, the "Instructions for Submission of Online Application" pages list EWS among the exempted categories, alongside SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen. A separate FAQ answer also leaves Ex-Servicemen out of the exempt list, even though Section 9 includes them.
Section 9 is the operative clause of the advertisement, and the notification states that non-receipt of the fee from UR, EWS and OBC (NCL) candidates leads to rejection. The safe course for EWS applicants is to plan on paying. If the portal waives the fee automatically when you select EWS, that is BEL's system applying its own rule. If you are unsure, raise a ticket through the Helpdesk tab inside the portal or call the toll-free number before the last date. Watch the Careers page for a corrigendum.
Warning: The category you choose in the form cannot be changed later, and the fee is not refunded under any circumstances. Do not pick EWS solely to avoid the fee, and do not pay twice under two registrations. Only the application with the higher Application Sequence Number is considered, and fees are not adjusted between registrations.
9. Selection Process
Selection has two scored stages: a Computer Based Test weighted at 85 marks and an Interview weighted at 15 marks. Candidates must clear a minimum qualifying score in each stage separately, and interview shortlisting is done in a 1:5 ratio by discipline and category.
Applications that meet the eligibility conditions and have the fee paid (where applicable) are provisionally shortlisted for the CBT. Eligibility is not actually verified until document verification.
A 120-minute objective test with 125 questions, tentatively on 22 December 2026. Call letters must be downloaded from the BEL website.
Five candidates are called for every vacancy, calculated separately for each discipline and each category. The shortlist is published on the BEL website through a query mode.
Original certificates are checked here, including the CGPA conversion certificate, category certificates and NOC for serving government or PSU employees.
The combined CBT and interview score decides the final merit. Appointment is subject to being declared medically fit by BEL's medical authorities.
Qualifying Marks
| Category | Minimum in CBT | Approx. Raw CBT Score (out of 125) | Minimum in Interview |
|---|---|---|---|
| General / OBC (NCL) / EWS | 35% | 43.75 marks | 35% |
| SC / ST / PwBD | 30% | 37.5 marks | 30% |
How Many Candidates Will Be Called for Interview?
Applying the 1:5 ratio to the category-wise vacancies gives the maximum interview pool, assuming enough candidates clear the qualifying marks in each category. These are our estimates; BEL has not published them.
| Discipline | UR | EWS | OBC (NCL) | SC | ST | Total Called (est.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electronics | 405 | 100 | 270 | 150 | 75 | 1,000 |
| Mechanical | 310 | 75 | 200 | 110 | 55 | 750 |
| Total | 715 | 175 | 470 | 260 | 130 | 1,750 |
Because the interview carries only 15 marks, the CBT decides most of the final ranking. A candidate who enters the interview a few CBT marks ahead holds a meaningful advantage, since the full spread of possible interview scores is limited.
The BEL Probationary Engineer Selection Process 2026 guide covers interview question areas for both disciplines, the documents checked at verification, and how tie-breaking is typically handled in BEL's final merit list.10. CBT Exam Pattern & Syllabus
The BEL PE CBT has 125 questions in 120 minutes: 100 technical questions from the candidate's engineering discipline and 25 General Aptitude and Reasoning questions. Each question carries 1 mark, and ¼ mark is deducted for every wrong answer.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical (Electronics or Mechanical core subjects) | 100 | 100 | 120 minutes (combined) |
| General Aptitude & Reasoning | 25 | 25 | |
| Total | 125 | 125 | 120 minutes |
| Feature | Rule |
|---|---|
| Correct answer | +1 mark |
| Wrong answer | −0.25 mark |
| Unattempted / marked for review | 0 marks |
| Language | Bilingual (English & Hindi); English version prevails on any discrepancy |
| Time per question | About 58 seconds on average |
| CBT weight in final merit | 85 marks |
Negative Marking: When Guessing Pays
The notification does not state how many options each question has. If it follows the usual four-option format, a pure blind guess has a slightly positive expected value: a 1-in-4 chance of +1 against a 3-in-4 chance of −0.25 averages to +0.0625 marks per guess. If you can confidently eliminate one wrong option, the expected value rises to about +0.17 marks, and eliminating two options raises it to about +0.375. In practice, educated guesses after eliminating at least one option are worth taking, but leaving a question blank is the safer choice when you have no basis at all and are already well clear of the cut-off.
Syllabus Scope
BEL does not publish a topic list. The notification states that technical questions come from the core engineering subjects of the candidate's own discipline, and that the aptitude section tests analytical and reasoning ability. In practice, Electronics candidates should cover the standard ECE core (network theory, analog and digital electronics, signals and systems, control systems, communication, electromagnetics, microprocessors), and Mechanical candidates the standard core (strength of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, theory of machines, manufacturing, industrial engineering, machine design).
For subject-wise weightage estimates, a 6-week preparation plan aligned to the 22 December CBT date, and recommended books for both branches, see our BEL Probationary Engineer Syllabus & Exam Pattern 2026 guide.11. How to Apply
Applications are accepted only online through the Careers section of the bel-india.in website, in two stages: registration and then the full application with document upload and fee payment. No hard copy is to be posted to BEL.

Important: Once submitted, the application cannot be edited or withdrawn. Submit only one application per post. If you submit more than one, only the one with the higher Application Sequence Number is considered.
12. Medical Standards & Service Bond
Appointment depends on being declared medically fit by BEL's medical authorities, and colour-blind candidates are not suitable for either the Electronics or Mechanical post. Every selected candidate must also sign a 2-year service agreement carrying a breach amount of ₹2,00,000.
| Condition | Details |
|---|---|
| Training | 6 months of orientation / on-the-job training |
| Service Agreement | Serve BEL for 2 years at any Unit or Office |
| Breach Amount | ₹2,00,000 |
| Medical Fitness | As per BEL's own medical standards, assessed by company medical authorities |
| Colour Blindness | Not suitable for Probationary Engineer (Electronics or Mechanical) |
For final-year students and recent graduates holding other offers, the bond is the main financial trade-off. At the stated CTC, ₹2 lakh is roughly two months of cost-to-company, so it is unlikely to deter someone planning a long PSU career. It matters most for candidates also preparing for GATE-based PSU recruitment, ESE, or higher studies within two years. Weigh that before accepting the offer, not after.
Pro Tip: If you are unsure about colour vision, take an Ishihara colour-vision test at any eye clinic before paying the fee. Colour blindness is only checked at the medical stage, after you have already cleared the CBT and interview.
13. Place of Posting & Exam Centres
Selected engineers are posted to Production or Support Services departments at BEL units across eight states, and BEL may post them anywhere in India. The CBT is held at centres in 89 cities across 29 states and union territories; candidates select five preferred centres.

Section 9 of the notification sets the fee at ₹1,180 (₹1,000 + GST) for UR, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates. SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen are exempt. The application-instruction pages also list EWS as exempt, so EWS candidates should plan to pay unless the portal waives it, and confirm with the BEL helpdesk.
The CBT has 125 questions in 120 minutes: 100 technical questions from your discipline and 25 General Aptitude & Reasoning questions. Each correct answer earns 1 mark and each wrong answer loses 0.25 marks. The paper is bilingual (English and Hindi).
The Computer Based Test is tentatively scheduled for 22 December 2026. BEL may change the date. Call letters will only be available for download on the BEL website, not by e-mail or post.
Final merit combines the CBT (85 marks) and the Interview (15 marks). Candidates must score at least 35% (UR/OBC/EWS) or 30% (SC/ST/PwBD) in each stage separately. Interview shortlisting is in a 1:5 ratio, discipline-wise and category-wise.
Yes. Selected candidates undergo 6 months of training and must sign a 2-year service agreement with BEL. Leaving before the bond period ends requires paying ₹2,00,000.
Candidates can apply, but BEL's medical standards state that colour-blind candidates are not suitable for the Probationary Engineer post in either Electronics or Mechanical. This is checked at the medical examination after the interview, so test your colour vision before applying.
No travel cost is reimbursed for the CBT. Outstation candidates shortlisted for the interview are reimbursed AC Chair Car or III Tier AC train fare by the shortest route from their correspondence address.
