1. Introduction
POWERGRID Engineer Trainee Recruitment 2026 offers 319 Engineer Trainee posts — 250 Electrical, 48 Civil and 21 Computer Science — filled through GATE 2026 marks, a Group Discussion and a Personal Interview, with online applications open from 3 November 2026 (5:00 PM) to 18 November 2026 (11:59 PM) on powergrid.in.
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), the Maharatna transmission utility under the Ministry of Power, first announced this intake through Advertisement No. CC/04/2025 dated 27 September 2025. That advance advertisement left the vacancy count blank. After a holding notice on 6 April 2026, POWERGRID published the vacancy notice on 3 November 2026, more than thirteen months after the original advertisement and about seven months later than the "February/March 2026" window it had indicated.
There is no separate written test. Your GATE 2026 normalised marks (out of 100) in the matching paper — EE, CE or CS — decide whether you are called for interview and carry 85% of the final score. Selected trainees join at a basic pay of ₹40,000 in the ₹40,000–3%–₹1,40,000 (IDA) scale, which POWERGRID values at about ₹11 lakh CTC during training and about ₹22.5 lakh CTC after absorption as Engineer (E2).
Most coverage of this notice repeats the vacancy table. This guide adds what the notice does not tell you: how the 2026 intake compares with the 2025 cycle discipline by discipline, POWERGRID's own published cut-off marks from previous cycles, how many candidates were called per post last year, how far a strong interview can offset a GATE deficit, and which eligibility conditions have quietly changed meaning because the application window opened so late.
Editorial Note: This article is prepared by the Vacancy Vedika Editorial Team from POWERGRID's advance advertisement CC/04/2025, the vacancy notice of 3 November 2026 as reported, and POWERGRID's own cut-off and shortlist notices from the GATE 2023 and GATE 2025 cycles. Figures labelled "our calculation" or "estimate" are derived by us from those documents and are not published by POWERGRID. The category-wise vacancy split was not available to us at the time of writing; we will add it once verified against the official notice.
2. What Changed in the 3 November 2026 Vacancy Notice?
The vacancy notice dropped the Electronics discipline, fixed the application window at 3–18 November 2026, and confirmed 319 posts — but it did not change the eligibility rules frozen in the September 2025 advertisement.
| Item | Advance Advt. CC/04/2025 (27.09.2025) | Vacancy Notice (03.11.2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Disciplines | Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Computer Science (tentative) | Electrical, Civil, Computer Science only |
| Vacancies | "To be indicated in the notification" | 319 (EE 250, CE 48, CS 21) |
| Application window | February/March 2026 (tentative) | 3 Nov 2026, 5:00 PM – 18 Nov 2026, 11:59 PM |
| Age cut-off date | 31.12.2025 | Unchanged as reported — 31.12.2025 |
| Final-year result deadline | 14.08.2026 | Already passed — effectively you now need the final result in hand |
| GATE validity | GATE 2026 only | GATE 2026 only |
Three consequences follow. First, GATE 2026 EC candidates have no post in this cycle, even though the advance advertisement listed Electronics and many students chose the EC paper partly for POWERGRID. Second, the window slipped by about eight months from "February/March 2026", so many GATE 2026 qualifiers have already joined M.Tech programmes or other PSUs. Third, the age cut-off is still pegged to 31 December 2025, which means nobody gains or loses eligibility because of the delay.
Key Takeaways
- Electronics (GATE EC) has zero posts in ET-2026.
- The window is only 15 days, opening at 5:00 PM on 3 November 2026.
- Age is still counted as on 31.12.2025, not on the application date.
3. Important Dates & Expected Timeline
Applications and fee payment for POWERGRID ET-2026 run from 3 November 2026 at 5:00 PM to 18 November 2026 at 11:59 PM; interview dates have not been announced.

| GATE 2026 Regular Registration Closed | 28 September 2025 |
| GATE 2026 Extended Registration Closed (late fee) | 9 October 2025 |
| Age Reckoning Date | 31 December 2025 |
| POWERGRID Notice 01/2026 ("detailed notification shortly") | 6 April 2026 |
| Final-Year Result Deadline | 14 August 2026 |
| Vacancy Notice & Online Application Opens | 3 November 2026 (5:00 PM) |

How Fast Did POWERGRID Move Last Year?
The ET-2025 cycle (GATE 2025) ran on a very similar autumn calendar, so its official notices are the best guide to what happens after 18 November 2026.
| ET-2025 Milestone (official notices) | Date | Days after application closed |
|---|---|---|
| Vacancy notification & application opens | 30 Sep 2025 | — |
| Application closes | 16 Oct 2025 | 0 |
| Electronics shortlist + cut-off (Notice-4) | 31 Oct 2025 | 15 |
| Electrical shortlist + cut-off (Notice-5) | 4 Nov 2025 | 19 |
| Electronics DV, GD & Interview | 10–11 Nov 2025 | 25–26 |
| Electrical DV, GD & Interview begin | 12 Nov 2025 | 27 |
| Selected list, CS & EC (Notice-8) | 21 Nov 2025 | 36 |
If POWERGRID repeats that pace, which is our estimate and not an official schedule, shortlists for ET-2026 would appear in the first week of December 2026, interviews would run through mid-December 2026, and the first selection lists could follow by late December 2026. Keep your GATE 2026 scorecard, certificates and a formal outfit ready from early December.
Deadline Alert: The window opens at 5:00 PM on 3 November, not at midnight. An application is treated as complete only after the ₹500 fee is paid online (where applicable). Do not leave payment for the night of 18 November.
4. Vacancy Details & Year-on-Year Comparison
POWERGRID ET-2026 has 319 vacancies: 250 in Electrical (78%), 48 in Civil (15%) and 21 in Computer Science (7%), with no Electronics posts.
| Post | GATE 2026 Paper | Vacancies | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineer Trainee (Electrical) | EE | 250 | 78.4% |
| Engineer Trainee (Civil) | CE | 48 | 15.0% |
| Engineer Trainee (Computer Science) | CS | 21 | 6.6% |
| Engineer Trainee (Electronics) | EC | 0 | — |
| Total | 319 | 100% |
ET-2026 vs ET-2025: Which Discipline Gained Most?
The 2025 intake (Notice 1 dated 30.09.2025) offered 221 posts across POWERGRID and its subsidiary CTUIL (Central Transmission Utility of India Ltd). Set side by side, the 2026 intake is 44% larger, and the Computer Science jump is the standout.
| Discipline | ET-2025 (GATE 2025) | ET-2026 (GATE 2026) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical | 180 (POWERGRID 149 + CTUIL 31) | 250 | +70 (+39%) |
| Civil | 33 (POWERGRID) | 48 | +15 (+45%) |
| Computer Science | 2 (CTUIL) | 21 | +19 (10.5×) |
| Electronics | 6 (CTUIL) | 0 | −6 |
| Total | 221 | 319 | +98 (+44%) |
The Computer Science expansion matters for cut-offs. In 2025 there were only two CS posts, both in CTUIL, so the CS call cut-off reflected an extremely narrow shortlist. With 21 posts, POWERGRID has to call many more CS candidates, and the effective bar should sit lower relative to that year's paper. POWERGRID's own ₹3.06 lakh crore capital outlay up to 2032 covers smart metering and data-centre business alongside transmission, which is consistent with a larger IT intake.
Category-Wise Split
Reservation for OBC (NCL), EWS, SC, ST and PwBD applies as per Government of India directives. The category-wise numbers are in the official vacancy notice posted in the POWERGRID careers section. We have not yet been able to verify them against the official document, so we are not reproducing figures here. For reference, the 2025 POWERGRID Electrical split of 149 posts was UR 71, OBC 38, SC 21, ST 7, EWS 12, which shows that POWERGRID's roster does not follow the textbook 40.5/27/15/7.5/10 percentages exactly.
Key Takeaways
- Total intake is up 44% on 2025 (221 → 319).
- Computer Science grows from 2 to 21 posts — the biggest relative jump.
- Do not assume standard reservation percentages; check your category's exact count in the official notice.
5. Eligibility Criteria
To apply, you need a full-time B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc (Engg.) in an accepted branch with at least 60% marks (or equivalent CGPA), and you must have appeared and qualified in the matching GATE 2026 paper.
| Post | Accepted Degree Branches | GATE 2026 Paper |
|---|---|---|
| Engineer Trainee (Electrical) | Electrical / Electrical (Power) / Electrical & Electronics / Power Systems Engineering / Power Engineering (Electrical) | EE |
| Engineer Trainee (Civil) | Civil Engineering | CE |
| Engineer Trainee (Computer Science) | Computer Science / Computer Engineering / Information Technology | CS |
Conditions That Catch Candidates Out
- Branch and paper must both match. An ECE graduate who wrote GATE EE is not eligible for the Electrical post, because Electronics & Communication is not in the Electrical branch list. With Electronics dropped, ECE graduates have no route in this cycle.
- IT graduates are eligible for Computer Science, but they must have written the GATE CS paper. A GATE DA (Data Science & AI) score does not count.
- Only GATE 2026 counts. POWERGRID states that GATE 2025 or earlier scores are not valid, and shortlisting uses normalised marks out of 100, not the GATE score out of 1000.
- 60% means aggregate of all semesters/years. SC/ST/PwBD candidates applying against posts reserved for their category need only pass marks.
- CGPA conversion: use your university's official formula. If none exists, POWERGRID divides your CGPA by the maximum CGPA and multiplies by 100 — so 6.0/10 converts to exactly 60%.
- Date of qualification is the date of issue of your final mark sheet.
- Full-time only. Part-time, distance or correspondence degrees do not qualify.
- Indian nationals aged 18 or above only.
Final-year clause is now moot: The advertisement allowed final-year students whose results were expected by 14 August 2026. That date has passed. If your final result was not declared by 14.08.2026, you do not meet the condition, even though the application window has only just opened.
6. Age Limit & Date-of-Birth Cut-offs
The upper age limit is 28 years as on 31 December 2025 for UR/EWS candidates, with relaxation of 3 years for OBC (NCL), 5 years for SC/ST and 10–15 years for PwBD on posts reserved for their category.
Because the reckoning date is fixed, every candidate can convert the limit into a birth-date cut-off. The dates below are our calculation, using the usual central PSU reading that a candidate is within "28 years" until the day before their 29th birthday. Confirm against the official notice if you are within a few days of the boundary.
| Category | Relaxation | Maximum Age on 31.12.2025 | Born On or After (our calculation) |
|---|---|---|---|
| UR / EWS | — | 28 | 01.01.1997 |
| OBC (NCL) | 3 years | 31 | 01.01.1994 |
| SC / ST | 5 years | 33 | 01.01.1992 |
| PwBD (UR / EWS) | 10 years | 38 | 01.01.1987 |
| PwBD (OBC-NCL) | 13 years | 41 | 01.01.1984 |
| PwBD (SC / ST) | 15 years | 43 | 01.01.1982 |
| Ex-Servicemen / Victims of riots | As per Government of India directives | ||
Category relaxation applies only to posts reserved for that category. An OBC candidate aged 30 cannot compete for a UR seat, so if your category has very few seats in a discipline, your effective competition is for those few seats.
7. Previous Year GATE Cut-off Marks — Can Your Score Get You Shortlisted?
POWERGRID's official call-for-interview cut-off for Electrical (UR) was 48.33 GATE marks in 2023 and 51.00 marks in 2025; Civil and Computer Science have historically needed upwards of 67 marks for UR.
These are POWERGRID's own figures for being called to DV, GD and interview, in normalised GATE marks out of 100. They are not final selection cut-offs.
Electrical (GATE EE) — Official
| Cycle | UR | OBC (NCL) | EWS | SC | ST | PwBD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GATE 2023 | 48.33 | 43.00 | 44.00 | 35.00 | 35.67 | I/c 22.33 · LD 18.33 · HI 20.33 · SLD 27.00 |
| GATE 2025 (180 posts) | 51.00 | 45.67 | 43.67 | 37.67 | 35.33 | I/c 16.67 · HI 36.67 · LD 16.67 |
Civil, Computer Science & Electronics — GATE 2023 (Official)
| Post (GATE Paper) | UR | OBC (NCL) | EWS | SC | ST | PwBD-SLD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Civil (CE) | 72.00 | 67.00 | 64.67 | 58.33 | 57.67 | — |
| Computer Science (CS) | 67.33 | 58.67 | 50.67 | 52.67 | 47.33 | 22.33 |
| Electronics (EC) | 66.00 | 61.00 | 58.33 | 51.33 | 43.33 | 23.00 |
For GATE 2024, education portals report UR cut-offs of about 46.33 (EE), 72.52 (CE) and 67.88 (CS). We could not verify these against an official POWERGRID notice, so treat them as indicative. In the 2025 Electronics round, POWERGRID's Notice-4 set a UR call cut-off of 62.33, and the final composite cut-off (GATE + GD + interview) for the selected list was reported at 65.015 for UR.
How Many Candidates Are Called per Post?
POWERGRID's Notice-5 (4 November 2025) listed the application IDs of every Electrical candidate called for interview. By our count it contains about 580 IDs for 180 Electrical posts — roughly 3.2 candidates per post. The 2025 Electronics round reportedly called about 35 candidates for 6 posts, close to 6 per post, which is typical when a discipline has very few seats.
If POWERGRID keeps a similar ratio, around 800 Electrical candidates could be called for 250 posts in 2026 (our estimate). A larger call list usually pushes the cut-off down, but the GATE 2026 EE paper's difficulty also moves marks, so we do not publish a predicted cut-off number. A practical rule: if your GATE 2026 EE marks are within a few marks of the 2025 cut-off for your category, apply.
Key Takeaways
- Electrical UR call cut-off: 48.33 (2023) and 51.00 (2025), official.
- Civil and CS cut-offs run 15–20 marks higher than Electrical because the papers score differently.
- About 3.2 Electrical candidates per post were called in 2025 (our count).
8. Selection Process & Weightage Maths
POWERGRID ranks candidates on a 100-point final score made of GATE 2026 marks (85%), Group Discussion (3%) and Personal Interview (12%); you must separately qualify GATE and the interview.
| Stage | Weightage | Qualifying Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| GATE 2026 normalised marks (out of 100), matching paper | 85% | Qualify as per GATE 2026 organising body; then category-wise shortlisting |
| Group Discussion | 3% | No qualifying marks |
| Personal Interview | 12% | 40% for UR/EWS; 30% for OBC (NCL)/SC/ST/PwBD on reserved posts |
| Psychometric Assessment | — | May be conducted; used as an input to the interview |
| Pre-Employment Medical Examination | — | Must be medically fit as per POWERGRID norms; no relaxation |
How Much Can the Interview Make Up?
Each GATE mark is worth 0.85 points in the final score. The GD and interview together are worth up to 15 points. Working through the arithmetic (our calculation):
- A candidate with 55 GATE marks starts at 46.75; one with 50 marks starts at 42.50. The gap is only 4.25 points.
- The 40% interview minimum for UR/EWS equals 4.8 out of 12. Among qualified candidates, interview scores can therefore differ by up to 7.2 points.
- So a 5-mark GATE deficit can, in principle, be overturned at interview. A 10-mark deficit (8.5 points) is very hard to recover.
The interview matters more than its 12% label suggests, but only at the margin. It is also a pass/fail gate: a high GATE scorer who falls below 40% in the interview is out, regardless of rank.
Tie-Breaker
If two or more candidates have equal final marks, the older candidate is placed higher. Offers are issued in order of category-wise merit and requirement, and selected candidates are informed only through the online candidate login. You can take the GD and interview in Hindi or English.
9. Salary, CTC & Pay Scale
Engineer Trainees earn a basic pay of ₹40,000 in the ₹40,000–3%–₹1,40,000 (IDA) scale during one year of training (approx. CTC ₹11 lakh), then move to the E2 scale of ₹50,000–3%–₹1,60,000 as Engineer (approx. CTC ₹22.5 lakh).
| Stage | Pay Scale (IDA) | Starting Basic | Approx. CTC per Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineer Trainee (1-year training) | ₹40,000–3%–₹1,40,000 | ₹40,000 | ₹11.00 lakh |
| Engineer, E2 (after training) | ₹50,000–3%–₹1,60,000 | ₹50,000 | ₹22.50 lakh |
During training you receive basic pay plus Industrial Dearness Allowance (IDA), HRA and perks at 12% of basic pay. After regularisation the package widens to include cafeteria-style perks and allowances, Performance Related Pay, company lease accommodation or quarters or HRA, conveyance and digital services reimbursement, a laptop, PF, gratuity, pension, leave encashment, group insurance and medical cover for you and your dependants. POWERGRID notes that the CTC varies with the place of posting.
The step from ₹11 lakh to ₹22.5 lakh roughly doubles CTC after one year, which is one of the steepest post-training jumps among GATE-recruiting PSUs. Note that most of this jump comes from moving to the E2 grade and the full perks package, not from a higher basic alone.
10. Service Bond
Selected candidates must sign a service agreement bond of ₹5,00,000 (General/OBC-NCL/EWS) or ₹2,50,000 (SC/ST/PwBD) to complete training and then serve POWERGRID for at least three years.
| Category | Bond Amount | Commitment |
|---|---|---|
| General / OBC (NCL) / EWS | ₹5,00,000 | 1-year training + minimum 3 years' service |
| SC / ST / PwBD | ₹2,50,000 | 1-year training + minimum 3 years' service |
In practical terms, the ₹5 lakh bond equals a little under half of the first year's ₹11 lakh CTC. If you are also waiting on results from other PSU drives this season, such as BEL or NTPC, decide your order of preference before signing, because walking away within the bond period is expensive.
11. Application Fee
The non-refundable application fee is ₹500 for General, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates, payable online only; SC, ST, PwBD, Ex-Servicemen and departmental candidates are exempt.
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| General (UR) / OBC (NCL) / EWS | ₹500 |
| SC / ST / PwBD / Ex-SM / Departmental | Nil |
The fee is paid after logging in to your candidate account, and the application process is treated as complete only on payment. There is no separate women's fee exemption in this advertisement.
12. How to Apply for POWERGRID ET-2026
Apply online only, through the Careers section of powergrid.in, between 3 November 2026 (5:00 PM) and 18 November 2026 (11:59 PM), using your GATE 2026 Application Number and Registration Number.
- Go to www.powergrid.in → Careers → Job Opportunities and open "Recruitment of Engineer Trainees-2026 through GATE 2026, Advt No. CC/04/2025".
- Register with your GATE 2026 Application Number, GATE 2026 Registration Number, a working email ID and mobile number. Add recruitment@powergrid.in to your address book.
- Fill in personal, educational and category details exactly as they appear on your certificates. Enter your degree percentage using your university's conversion rule.
- Upload the required documents and photograph in the specified formats.
- Log in to the candidate section and pay ₹500 online (if applicable).
- Submit, then download and save the application form and payment confirmation.
For technical problems, email recruitment@powergrid.in with the subject "Engineer Trainee-2026 - Technical Issue - <subject>"; for other queries use "Engineer Trainee-2026 - <subject>". POWERGRID will not respond to queries raised through its Complaint Management System.
13. Documents & Certificate Date Traps
Keep your GATE 2026 admit card and scorecard, degree and mark sheets, and a category certificate in the Government of India format; POWERGRID checks them at the GD/interview, medical and joining stages.
- GATE 2026 Admit Card and GATE 2026 Scorecard
- B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc (Engg.) mark sheets for all semesters and degree certificate
- CGPA-to-percentage conversion certificate from your university, if applicable
- SC/ST certificate in the central format for "Appointment to posts under Govt. of India"
- OBC (NCL) certificate in the central format, plus a self-undertaking at interview
- EWS Income & Asset Certificate naming your caste ("General"/"Samanya" is not accepted)
- PwBD medical certificate (40%+ permanent disability) and UDID card
- No Objection Certificate if you work in a government organisation or PSU
- Certified Hindi/English translation of any certificate issued in another language
Certificate Date Trap: The September 2025 advertisement asks for an OBC (NCL) certificate based on income for FY 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25, issued on or after 01.04.2025, and an EWS certificate based on FY 2024-25 income, issued on or after 01.04.2025. Because the window opened in November 2026, many candidates now hold newer FY 2025-26 certificates. Check whether the vacancy notice revises these dates. If it does not, carry a certificate that meets the advertisement's wording as well as your latest one.
OBC (NCL) and EWS status must hold as on the last date of online application — 18 November 2026.
14. Reservation & PwBD Suitability
Each Engineer Trainee post is identified as suitable for specific PwBD sub-categories, and only Computer Science is open to Blind and Low Vision candidates.
| PwBD Sub-category | Electrical | Civil | Computer Science |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blind / Low Vision | No | No | Yes |
| Deaf / Hard of Hearing | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| One Arm / One Leg | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Both Legs | Yes | No | Yes |
| One Arm and One Leg | Yes | No | Yes |
| Cerebral Palsy, Leprosy Cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack Victim | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Muscular Dystrophy | No | No | Yes |
| SD/SI (with or without limb dysfunction) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Autism Spectrum Disorder (Mild) | No | No | Yes |
| Specific Learning Disability, Mental Illness | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Multiple disabilities (from the above) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Only persons with at least 40% permanent disability qualify for PwBD benefits. Reservation and relaxation for OBC (NCL), SC, ST, EWS, PwBD, Ex-Servicemen, J&K domiciles and victims of riots follow Government of India directives. Interview qualifying marks drop to 30% only for candidates applying against posts reserved for their own category.
15. Who Should Not Apply & Silent Disqualifiers
POWERGRID explicitly asks graduates who plan higher studies on their GATE 2026 score, or who would need extra time to join, not to apply.
| Situation | Consequence | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Already enrolled in M.Tech/MS using GATE 2026 | POWERGRID states such candidates "need not apply" | Decide before applying; joining-time extensions are not offered |
| GATE EC score, ECE degree | No Electronics post this cycle | Target ET-2027 or other PSUs |
| Final result declared after 14.08.2026 | Not eligible as a final-year applicant | Check your result date on the mark sheet |
| Degree below 60% (UR/OBC/EWS) | Ineligible at any stage | Use the official CGPA conversion, not your own estimate |
| Working in Govt./PSU without NOC | Candidature can be rejected at interview | Request the NOC now |
| Medically unfit as per POWERGRID norms | Offer withdrawn; no relaxation | Review the medical standards on powergrid.in |
| False or suppressed information | Rejection, or termination even after joining | Fill every field from original documents |
- Postings are all-India and largely at project sites, including remote renewable-energy corridors in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Ladakh and elsewhere. Postings can also be to subsidiaries, joint ventures or other government bodies, in India or abroad.
- POWERGRID trainees are not treated as departmental candidates.
- Legal jurisdiction for any dispute is the NCT of Delhi.
- Management reserves the right to cancel, restrict or modify the recruitment without further notice.
Fraud Warning: All information about this recruitment is published only on the POWERGRID careers page, and all correspondence goes to your registered email or candidate login. Anyone offering a POWERGRID job for money is not acting for POWERGRID.
16. Missed GATE 2026? The ET-2027 Route
POWERGRID has already published Advertisement No. CC/03/2026 dated 24 September 2026 for Engineer Trainee-2027 through GATE 2027, so candidates who are ineligible this cycle can target the next one.
The ET-2027 advertisement again lists Electronics as a discipline, which is relevant for ECE graduates shut out of ET-2026. As with this cycle, vacancies will be published closer to the application window, which POWERGRID lists as running up to April 2027. Register for the matching GATE 2027 paper and keep your scorecard.
