1. What Is RRB Isolated Categories Recruitment 2026?

RRB Isolated Categories Recruitment 2026 is a centralised Indian Railways hiring drive under CEN No. 09/2026 for approximately 195 specialised posts in Pay Level 2 and Pay Level 7 of the 7th CPC matrix, with online applications open from 5 November 2026 to 4 December 2026 (23:59 hours), both dates tentative.

"Isolated categories" is the Railways' term for posts that do not belong to any large cadre such as NTPC, Group D, Technician or Junior Engineer. They are small, skill-specific roles — legal, scientific, laboratory, welfare and similar — that each need only a handful of people across all Zonal Railways and Production Units. Because the numbers are small, the Railway Recruitment Boards bundle them into one common notification instead of running separate exams.

What the indicative notice dated 24 October 2026 does not say is just as important as what it says. It gives no post names, no qualifications, no age bands and no RRB-wise split — all of that is reserved for the detailed CEN 09/2026. This guide fills that gap with what can be reliably projected from the two previous cycles (CEN 07/2024 and CEN 08/2025), and clearly separates confirmed facts from projections so you can prepare documents now and verify the rest the day the detailed notice appears.

Editorial Note: This article is based on the official RRB indicative notice for CEN No. 09/2026 (No. RRB/GHY/Advt./CEN/09/2026, dated 24 October 2026). Every value marked "expected" or "based on CEN 08/2025" is a projection from the previous official notification, not a confirmed figure for 2026. The Vacancy Vedika Editorial Team will update this page as soon as the detailed CEN is published. Last reviewed: 3 November 2026.

If you are short on time, this is the bottom line: 195 posts, Level 2 and Level 7 only, age counted on 1 January 2027, one application to one RRB, and your Aadhaar name and date of birth must match your Class 10 certificate exactly. Fix the Aadhaar part first — it is the one task that cannot be done in a hurry during the application window.

2. About the Railway Recruitment Boards

The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) are the recruitment agencies of the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, responsible for filling Group 'C' posts across all Zonal Railways and Production Units. For centralised notifications like CEN 09/2026, one RRB acts as the nodal board for the advertisement — the "GHY" in this notice's reference number points to RRB Guwahati — while every regional RRB recruits against its own share of the vacancies.

Organization Profile

  • Full Name: Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), Ministry of Railways
  • Notification: Centralised Employment Notification (CEN) No. 09/2026
  • Reference No.: RRB/GHY/Advt./CEN/09/2026, dated 24 October 2026
  • Recruitment For: Various posts of Isolated Categories
  • Pay Levels: Level 2 and Level 7 (7th CPC)
  • Job Location: Zonal Railways and Production Units across India (RRB-wise)
  • Common Website: rrb.indianrailways.gov.in

The indicative notice states that the detailed CEN — including any corrigendum — will be published exclusively on the common RRB website, from where candidates can open the pages of individual RRBs. Treat any other "notification PDF" circulating before that as unofficial.

3. RRB Isolated Categories 2026 Important Dates

The online application window for RRB CEN 09/2026 runs for 30 days, from 5 November 2026 to 4 December 2026 at 23:59 hours; both dates are marked tentative in the official notice.

For context, the previous cycle (CEN 08/2025) closed on 29 January 2026, allowed fee payment until 31 January 2026, and opened the paid correction window from 1 to 10 February 2026. A similar sequence is likely this time, but rely only on the dates printed in the detailed CEN.

Deadline Alert: Qualification results must be declared on or before the closing date. If you are waiting for a final-year result that will come out after 4 December 2026, you are not eligible for this cycle.

4. What Changed from CEN 08/2025? (Trend Analysis)

RRB Isolated Categories vacancies have fallen in each of the last three cycles — from 1,036 (CEN 07/2024, combined with Ministerial posts) to 312 (CEN 08/2025) to about 195 (CEN 09/2026) — and the 2026 notice lists only two pay levels instead of three.

CycleScopeTotal VacanciesPay LevelsAge Crucial Date
CEN 07/2024Ministerial & Isolated Categories1,036Level 2 to Level 81 January 2025
CEN 08/2025Isolated Categories only (8 posts)312Level 2, 6 and 71 January 2026
CEN 09/2026Isolated Categories only195 (approx.)Level 2 and 71 January 2027

The missing Level 6 — what it likely means

In CEN 08/2025, four of the eight posts sat in Level 6: Junior Translator (Hindi) with 202 vacancies, Senior Publicity Inspector (15), Staff and Welfare Inspector (24) and Scientific Assistant (Training) (2). Together they made up 243 of 312 posts — about 78% of that recruitment. The CEN 09/2026 notice mentions only Level 2 and Level 7, which strongly suggests that none of these Level 6 posts is included this year.

This is an inference from the official pay-level column, not a confirmed post list. But it has a practical consequence: if you were preparing specifically for Junior Translator (Hindi) or Staff and Welfare Inspector, check the detailed CEN before investing more preparation time in this cycle.

Which posts fit Level 2 and Level 7?

Using the CEN 08/2025 post-to-pay-level mapping, the Level 7 posts were Chief Law Assistant, Public Prosecutor and Scientific Supervisor (Ergonomics and Training), and the only Level 2 post was Lab Assistant Grade III (Chemist and Metallurgist). The 2026 list may include any of these, may add new posts, or may drop some — the detailed CEN will settle it.

Pro Tip: The age crucial date has moved forward by exactly one year (1 January 2026 to 1 January 2027). If you were within one year of your upper age limit in CEN 08/2025 and did not apply or did not qualify, recheck — you may now be overage unless a category relaxation applies.

5. RRB Isolated Categories 2026 Vacancy Details

The official CEN 09/2026 indicative notice announces about 195 tentative vacancies across all RRBs for "various posts of Isolated Categories" in Level 2 and Level 7; the post-wise, RRB-wise and category-wise split will appear in the detailed CEN.

Reference: post-wise vacancies in the previous cycle (CEN 08/2025)

The table below shows the official CEN 08/2025 figures for the posts in the same two pay levels. Use it to understand the scale of each post — not as this year's numbers.

Lab Assistant Gr. III (Chemist & Metallurgist)Level 2₹19,900B118–30 years39
Total for Level 2 + Level 7 posts in CEN 08/202569

Here is the key observation: the same Level 2 and Level 7 posts accounted for only 69 vacancies in 2025, but the 2026 notice carries about 195. So even though the overall total has fallen, the vacancies in these two pay levels have nearly tripled — either the existing posts have many more openings this year, or new posts have been added to these levels. Either way, candidates eligible for Level 2 and Level 7 roles have more seats to compete for than last time.

We have prepared a RRB Isolated Categories 2026 vacancy breakdown that will map every post across all RRBs and the UR, EWS, OBC, SC and ST categories the moment the detailed CEN tables are released.

6. RRB Isolated Categories 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for RRB CEN 09/2026 is post-specific: each post carries its own educational qualification, age band and medical standard, which will be listed in the post parameter table (Annexure-A) of the detailed CEN.

Nationality

Based on the CEN 08/2025 conditions, a candidate must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 to settle permanently, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from specified countries (such as Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and several East African nations) to settle permanently. Candidates in the non-citizen categories need a Certificate of Eligibility from the Government of India, which must be produced at Document Verification.

Educational qualification — what the previous cycle required

Chief Law Assistant (Level 7)

  • Degree in Law from a recognised university
  • Prescribed years of practice at the Bar, as set in Annexure-A
  • Medical standard C1 in CEN 08/2025

Public Prosecutor (Level 7)

  • Degree in Law from a recognised university
  • Prescribed criminal-side practice experience as an advocate
  • Tighter age band (18–32 years) in CEN 08/2025

Scientific Supervisor – Ergonomics & Training (Level 7)

  • Postgraduate qualification in the relevant discipline
  • Experience requirement as set in Annexure-A
  • Medical standard B1 in CEN 08/2025

Lab Assistant Gr. III – Chemist & Metallurgist (Level 2)

  • Class 12 (10+2) in the Science stream
  • Exact subject combination as set in Annexure-A
  • Medical standard B1, which includes colour vision tests

Warning: The cards above summarise the CEN 08/2025 pattern only. Do not apply on the basis of these summaries — read the exact qualification wording in Annexure-A of CEN 09/2026. Eligibility is checked against your certificates at Document Verification, and a mismatch cancels your candidature even after you clear the CBT.

Certificates must carry a date of issue on or before the closing date. If your provisional or degree certificate was issued later, keep the consolidated marksheet showing the result-declaration date, or a certificate from the university confirming that date — RRBs ask for this at DV.

For the complete post-wise qualification matrix, experience-certificate format and nationality documents, read our RRB Isolated Categories Eligibility Criteria 2026 guide.

7. Age Limit as on 1 January 2027 and Date-of-Birth Windows

Age for RRB CEN 09/2026 is counted as on 1 January 2027; the minimum age is 18 for all posts, while the upper limit varies post-wise and will be printed in the detailed CEN.

The table below converts the five age bands used in CEN 08/2025 into actual date-of-birth limits for the 2027 crucial date, including the standard OBC (+3 years) and SC/ST (+5 years) relaxation. If this year's age bands stay the same, you can check your eligibility in seconds.

8. RRB Isolated Categories 2026 Salary: In-Hand Pay at 63% DA

A Level 2 isolated-category post starts at a basic pay of ₹19,900 and a Level 7 post at ₹44,900; with Dearness Allowance now at 63% (effective 1 July 2026), estimated monthly in-hand pay is roughly ₹32,600–₹37,400 for Level 2 and ₹73,300–₹85,200 for Level 7, depending on city class.

For a Y-class city, the approximate in-hand figure is about ₹34,640 for Level 2 and ₹77,782 for Level 7. These estimates exclude income tax, CGEGIS and professional tax, and assume no railway quarter has been allotted — HRA is not paid to employees living in railway accommodation.

Pension Note: New central government entrants are covered by the National Pension System, with the government contributing 14% of Basic + DA. Employees joining after April 2025 can also opt for the Unified Pension Scheme as per the applicable rules. Salary figures may change again once the 8th Central Pay Commission's recommendations are implemented.

9. Application Fee and Refund Rules

The fee for RRB CEN 09/2026 has not yet been announced, but every recent RRB CEN has charged ₹500 for general candidates and ₹250 for reserved and concession categories, with most of it refunded to candidates who actually appear in the first CBT.

CategoryExpected FeeRefund on Appearing in CBT
General / OBC / EWS (male)₹500₹400 (less bank charges)
SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minorities, Economically Backward Class₹250₹250 (less bank charges)
Modification of submitted application₹250 per modification (expected)Not refundable

Payment is made online through net banking, debit or credit card, or UPI. The refund goes to the bank account you enter in the application, so enter an account in your own name and double-check the IFSC — refunds to wrong or closed accounts are not reissued.

Note: Fee amounts above follow the pattern of recent RRB notifications and are expected, not confirmed, for CEN 09/2026. Confirm them in the detailed CEN before paying.

10. RRB Isolated Categories Selection Process

In CEN 08/2025, selection for isolated-category posts was made through a single-stage Computer Based Test (CBT), followed by Document Verification and a Medical Examination, with no interview and no physical test for these posts.

1
Single-Stage CBT

An objective test of 100 questions in 90 minutes, carrying half its marks from the post's own professional subject. RRBs reserve the right to hold an additional CBT if needed, in which case the first CBT can be treated as a qualifying screen.

2
Post-Specific Test (if applicable)

Some isolated posts have an extra qualifying test — for example, Junior Translator (Hindi) had a translation test in 2025. Check whether any 2026 post carries one.

3
Document Verification

Candidates equal to the number of vacancies are called for DV, in order of merit and post preference. All claims — qualification, age, category and experience — are checked against originals.

4
Medical Examination

Every candidate who clears DV is sent for a medical test against the standard fixed for the post. Failing the standard means no alternate appointment is offered.

5
Empanelment and Appointment

RRBs recommend the empanelled names, and the respective Railway administration issues the appointment after verifying antecedents and character.

When two candidates score the same marks, the older candidate ranks higher; if the date of birth is also identical, the tie is broken by the alphabetical order of the given name.

See exactly how merit lists are drawn, how many candidates were called per seat and what disqualifies you at DV in our RRB Isolated Categories Selection Process 2026 guide.

11. CBT Exam Pattern and Qualifying Marks

The RRB Isolated Categories CBT, as conducted under CEN 08/2025, had 100 one-mark questions in 90 minutes, with 50 marks from Professional Ability and one-third negative marking for each wrong answer.

SectionQuestionsMarks
Professional Ability (post-specific)5050
General Awareness1515
General Intelligence and Reasoning1515
Mathematics1010
General Science (up to Class 10 CBSE)1010
Total (90 minutes; 120 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates)100

The weighting matters more than it looks. Half the paper tests the subject of your own post — law for Chief Law Assistant and Public Prosecutor, chemistry and metallurgy basics for the Lab Assistant post — so a candidate with strong domain knowledge can build a lead that general-aptitude preparation alone cannot close.

Minimum qualifying marks (CEN 08/2025)

CategoryMinimum Percentage
UR / EWS40%
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) / SC30%
ST25%

These thresholds may be relaxed by 2 marks for PwBD candidates if there are not enough PwBD candidates for the reserved vacancies. Mock tests are made available on RRB websites before the exam.

Get the topic-wise syllabus for every professional-ability paper plus a six-week preparation plan in our RRB Isolated Categories Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2026 guide.

12. Medical Standards for Isolated Category Posts

Each RRB isolated-category post carries a fixed medical standard; in CEN 08/2025 the Level 7 legal posts required C1, while the Lab Assistant and Scientific Supervisor posts required the stricter B1 standard.

StandardDistant VisionNear VisionOther Tests
B16/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (lens power not over 4D)Sn 0.6, 0.6 with or without glassesColour, binocular, night and mesopic vision
C16/12, 6/18 with or without glassesSn 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses—
C26/12, nil with or without glassesSn 0.6 combined, with or without glasses—

Candidates who have had LASIK surgery can still qualify for B1 if the surgery is at least one year old (supported by a specialist's certificate), residual corneal thickness is at least 425 microns, the fundus is normal and there is no progressive eye disease. A candidate who fails the initial medical test may get one final medical appeal on payment of the prescribed charges.

Pro Tip: If you are applying for a B1 post such as Lab Assistant, get a private eye check-up including a colour-vision test before you apply. Colour vision cannot be corrected with glasses, and failing it at the medical stage ends your selection for that post.

13. Aadhaar Verification: The 100% Match Rule

The CEN 09/2026 notice advises every candidate to verify their primary details through Aadhaar, and for that to work, the name and date of birth in Aadhaar must match the Class 10 certificate 100%, with an updated photo and biometrics (fingerprint and iris).

This is the single most actionable instruction in the indicative notice. Applications that are not Aadhaar-verified are not rejected outright, but RRBs subject them to detailed scrutiny at every stage — CBT entry, DV and medical — which means more delays and more chances of a problem. Use the days before applying to fix any mismatch.

1
Compare spelling letter by letter

Place your Class 10 certificate next to your Aadhaar. Check initials versus expanded names, middle names, surname order, and single versus double letters. A difference as small as "Kumar" against "Kumaar" counts as a mismatch.

2
Check the date of birth format

Make sure Aadhaar shows your full date of birth, not just the year, and that it matches the certificate exactly.

3
Book a demographic update immediately

If anything differs, request a correction through an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or the online update service, using your Class 10 certificate as proof. Updates can take time to reflect, so start now rather than in the last week of the application window.

4
Refresh photo and biometrics

The notice specifically asks for the latest photo and biometrics. If your Aadhaar photo is from childhood, or your fingerprints fail at authentication, visit an enrolment centre for a biometric update.

5
Verify during account creation

Authenticate through Aadhaar or DigiLocker while creating your RRB account. If you miss it there, the application form offers a Verify Aadhaar option that must be completed before final submission.

14. How to Apply Online for RRB CEN 09/2026

Applications for RRB Isolated Categories 2026 are accepted online only, through the application link published on the official RRB websites, between 5 November 2026 and 4 December 2026; you submit one application to one RRB of your choice.

1
Open the official portal

Go to the common RRB website and follow the CEN 09/2026 application link. In the previous cycle, applications were submitted on the rrbapply.gov.in portal.

2
Log in or create an account

If you created an account for any RRB CEN in 2024, 2025 or 2026, use the same login. New candidates must create an account first. Details entered here, including mobile number and email, can never be changed later.

3
Select one RRB and your posts

Choose a single RRB and then list your eligible posts in order of preference. The RRB choice is final and cannot be modified even in the correction window.

4
Fill personal, educational and category details

Enter everything exactly as it appears in your certificates. Your eligibility is accepted provisionally on the basis of what you type here and verified only at DV.

5
Upload photo, signature and documents

Upload a recent photograph and signature in the specified format, plus any category or scribe certificates the form asks for.

6
Pay the fee and submit

Pay online, add the bank account for the refund, review the form and submit. Download and keep the final application copy.

Before you start, read our field-by-field How to Apply for RRB Isolated Categories 2026 guide covering photo and signature specifications, the fee-payment flow and the correction window rules.

15. How to Choose the Right RRB

Because you may apply to only one RRB and the choice cannot be changed, your RRB selection decides which vacancies you compete for — so pick the board that actually has vacancies for your post and category, not simply the one nearest your home.

With roughly 195 seats spread across all RRBs and several posts, many boards will have only one or two vacancies for a given post, and some will have none. In CEN 07/2024, for instance, individual RRBs listed as few as one vacancy for posts such as Librarian. Applying to a board with zero vacancies for your post wastes your only application.

Check in Annexure-BWhy It Matters
Does the RRB list your post at all?You can only be selected against vacancies the chosen RRB has notified.
Is there a vacancy in your category? One UR seat and zero SC seats means SC candidates compete only for the UR seat on merit.
How many posts can you select at that RRB?A board offering two of your eligible posts gives you two chances from one application.
Which Zonal Railway does the RRB recruit for?Your posting will be in that Railway's jurisdiction, so consider language and location.

Warning: Applying to more than one RRB leads to rejection of all your applications, and any attempt to submit multiple applications can bring debarment from future RRB and RRC examinations.

16. Common Mistakes That Lead to Rejection

Most RRB application rejections come from avoidable data mismatches rather than lack of eligibility; the table below lists the errors that cost candidates their candidature at the DV stage.

17. General Instructions

These instructions are drawn from the CEN 09/2026 indicative notice and the conditions applied in CEN 08/2025; the detailed CEN will be the final authority.

  • The indicative notice exists only to help candidates prepare; all terms, eligibility conditions and procedures will be governed by the detailed CEN 09/2026 and any corrigendum.
  • All recruitment communication is sent by SMS and email only, so keep the registered mobile number and email active until the process is complete.
  • The crucial date for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and other status claims is the closing date of the application, unless the CEN states otherwise.
  • Exam centres are allotted on technical and logistical feasibility; you may have to travel to another city or state, and centre changes are not allowed.
  • Requests to postpone the CBT, DV or medical examination are not entertained.
  • Use only official RRB websites. RRBs warn candidates to beware of touts, brokers and job racketeers — selection is purely on merit.
  • Fraudulent category claims lead to disqualification and debarment from RRB and RRC examinations.
  • Apply well before the closing date; RRBs take no responsibility for website congestion in the last days.

Probably not. Junior Translator (Hindi) is a Level 6 post, and the CEN 09/2026 notice mentions only Level 2 and Level 7. This is an inference from the pay-level column, so check the detailed CEN before deciding.

Age is counted as on 1 January 2027. The minimum age is 18; the upper limit is post-specific. In CEN 08/2025 the bands ranged from 18–30 years (Lab Assistant) to 18–40 years (Chief Law Assistant), with 3 years' relaxation for OBC-NCL and 5 years for SC/ST.

Level 2 starts at a basic pay of ₹19,900 and Level 7 at ₹44,900. With DA at 63% from 1 July 2026, the estimated in-hand pay is roughly ₹32,600–₹37,400 for Level 2 and ₹73,300–₹85,200 for Level 7, depending on the city class.

The fee is yet to be notified. Recent RRB CENs charged ₹500 for general candidates (₹400 refunded on appearing in the CBT) and ₹250 for SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and EBC candidates (fully refunded on appearing, less bank charges).

Based on CEN 08/2025, selection involves a single-stage CBT (100 questions, 90 minutes, one-third negative marking), followed by Document Verification and a Medical Examination. There is no interview and no physical test for these posts.

The CEN 09/2026 notice says Aadhaar-based verification succeeds only if the name and date of birth in Aadhaar match the Class 10 certificate 100%, with updated photo and biometrics. Applications without Aadhaar verification face stricter scrutiny at every stage, so update Aadhaar before applying.

No. You can submit only one application to one RRB. Applying to more than one RRB leads to rejection of all applications and can bring debarment from future RRB and RRC exams. Choose an RRB that has vacancies for your post and category.

Only if the final result is declared on or before the closing date of the application. Candidates whose results come out after the closing date are not eligible, as per the conditions followed in CEN 08/2025.

The detailed CEN and any corrigendum will be published only on the common RRB website, rrb.indianrailways.gov.in, from where you can open the pages of individual RRBs.
