1. What Is the SBI Risk Specialist Recruitment 2026?

State Bank of India (SBI) is hiring 3 Risk Specialists in the Middle Management Grade Scale II (MMGS-II) on a regular, permanent basis under Advertisement No. CRPD/SCO/2026-27/27. The role is a credit-risk modelling job: the selected officers will build, implement and validate the Expected Credit Loss (ECL) models that drive the bank's loan-loss provisioning. Online registration runs from 2 November 2026 to 23 November 2026, and selection is through shortlisting followed by a 100-mark interview, with no written exam.

This is not a mass-recruitment notice. It is a narrow, experience-gated hiring for professionals who already hold a CA, CFA, or an MBA/PGDM in Finance, Data Analytics or Business Analytics and have at least 2 years of post-qualification ECL modelling experience in a bank, financial institution, rating agency, brokerage or the risk advisory practice of a consulting firm. If you have spent the last two years building probability of default (PD), loss given default (LGD) or exposure at default (EAD) models, this notice was written with you in mind. If your experience is in general credit appraisal, audit or market risk, read Section 7 carefully before paying the fee.

The suggested posting is Mumbai, where SBI's Risk Management Department sits at the Corporate Centre, although the bank can post selected officers anywhere in India. The basic pay starts at ₹64,820 per month and rises to ₹93,960, with DA, HRA, CCA, NPS and other perquisites on top.

Editorial Note: This guide is written by the Vacancy Vedika editorial team from SBI's official advertisement CRPD/SCO/2026-27/27 dated 2 November 2026. Beyond restating the rules, we have worked through the pay-scale increments, the exact birth-date windows, the seat arithmetic and the experience requirements so you can judge your own eligibility. Where we interpret a rule rather than quote it, we say so. Always cross-check with the official notice on SBI's careers portal before applying.

2. About State Bank of India and Its Risk Function

State Bank of India is India's largest public sector bank and the country's largest lender by assets and branch network. Specialist Cadre Officer (SCO) recruitment is run by its Central Recruitment & Promotion Department (CRPD) at the Corporate Centre in Mumbai. SCO hiring differs from the bank's generalist Probationary Officer route. It brings in professionals with domain skills such as risk, IT, audit, economics and treasury, usually at a middle-management grade, and selects them mainly on profile and interview performance.

The Risk Specialist post sits in the credit-risk modelling side of the bank's Risk Management Department. The job profile mentions Oracle Financial Services Analytical Applications (OFSAA) as the platform on which PD, LGD and EAD models are implemented, which gives candidates a concrete technical anchor for preparation.

3. Important Dates and Deadlines

The application window is 22 days long and closes on 23 November 2026. Registration is complete only when the fee is paid, so the fee deadline and the application deadline are the same day. Several eligibility conditions are frozen on a different date, 31 October 2026, which falls before the window even opens.

PwBD certificate must be datedOn or before 23 November 2026A later-dated certificate can lead to cancellation
Shortlist and interview scheduleTo be announcedPosted on SBI website and sent by email only

Deadline Alert: Your 2 years of post-qualification experience must be complete by 31 October 2026, not by the last date of application. A candidate who qualified as a CA in December 2024 will not have 2 years by the crucial date, even though the window stays open until 23 November.

4. Vacancy Details: How Many Seats Are Really Open to You?

SBI has notified 3 regular vacancies for Risk Specialist at MMGS-II, and all 3 are Unreserved (UR). There are no vertically reserved seats for SC, ST, OBC or EWS. One of the three is horizontally reserved for a Visually Impaired (VI) candidate within the PwBD category.

PostGradeTypeSCSTOBCEWSURTotalPwBD (VI)
Risk SpecialistMMGS-IIRegular––––331
Grand Total31

Here is what the arithmetic means for different candidates:

  • Horizontal reservation is included in the 3, not added to it. If a suitable VI candidate is selected, the open merit competition is effectively for 2 seats.
  • SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates can apply, but they compete for the UR seats on UR terms. The notice says reserved-category candidates for whom no reservation is shown may apply against UR vacancies if they meet all UR eligibility conditions. Section 8 explains what that means for age relaxation.
  • A category-wise wait list will be kept for one year from the final result, or until a fresh advertisement for the same post, whichever is earlier. With only 3 seats, a wait-list position can still matter if a selected candidate does not join.
  • Vacancies are provisional. SBI may change the number, including reserved vacancies, depending on its requirements.

Pro Tip: With 3 seats, SBI will probably shortlist only a small multiple of the vacancies for interview. Shortlisting is done on the profile you submit, so the depth of ECL work shown in your resume and experience certificate decides whether you reach the interview at all.

5. ECL Risk Specialist vs Climate Risk Specialist: Which Post Is This?

This advertisement is for an ECL credit-risk modelling role. It is not the Manager (Risk Specialist – Climate Risk) post that SBI advertised earlier under CRPD/SCO/2025-26/24. Both carry the words "Risk Specialist", so search results and AI summaries often mix them up, but the experience demanded is completely different.

Point of ComparisonRisk Specialist (this notice)Manager – Risk Specialist (Climate Risk)

Applying with climate-risk experience to this ECL post, or the reverse, is a common mistake. It costs ₹750 and leads to rejection at document verification.

6. Eligibility Criteria: Qualification, Certification and Experience

To be eligible, you need one of three mandatory qualifications, plus at least 2 years of post-qualification ECL modelling experience, both as on 31 October 2026. A risk certification (FRM or PRM) is preferred but not required. Only Indian citizens may apply.

Mandatory Qualification (any one)

  • Chartered Accountant (CA)
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)
  • MBA / PGDM or equivalent in Finance, Data Analytics or Business Analytics from a recognized institute

Preferred Certification

  • Financial Risk Manager (FRM) from GARP, or
  • Professional Risk Manager (PRM) from PRMIA
  • Must be valid as on 31 October 2026

Mandatory Experience

  • Minimum 2 years after the qualifying degree or certification
  • In ECL-related modelling
  • In a bank, FI, rating agency or brokerage risk department, or risk advisory in a consulting firm

Specific Skills

  • Python, R, SPSS, SAS or similar
  • Comfort with large datasets
  • Advanced MS Excel and PowerPoint
  • Communication, analytical thinking and problem solving

Three details in the eligibility rules deserve attention:

  • The qualification is a minimum. SBI says you must hold the basic qualification and the relevant full-time experience as on the specified date. Part-time or concurrent work while studying is unlikely to be counted as post-qualification experience.
  • MBA specialisation matters. The MBA or PGDM must be in Finance, Data Analytics or Business Analytics. An MBA in Marketing or HR, even with strong ECL experience, does not meet the wording. In that case the qualifying route would have to be CA or CFA.
  • FRM or PRM helps at shortlisting. It is listed as preferred, and the shortlisting committee sets its own parameters. In a pool competing for 3 seats, a preferred certification is a likely differentiator. This is our inference; SBI does not publish the shortlisting weights.
For the full qualification matrix, how SBI reads "equivalent" degrees and CFA levels, and a category-wise age relaxation breakdown, see our SBI Risk Specialist Eligibility Criteria 2026 guide.

7. Does Your Experience Count? The ECL Experience Fit Test

Your experience counts only if it is ECL-related modelling work, done after your qualifying degree, in one of the five employer types SBI names, and shown explicitly in your experience certificate. This is where most applications for specialist risk posts fail. Generic "risk management" or "credit" experience is not enough.

ECL is the forward-looking provisioning approach under Ind AS 109 / IFRS 9. Lenders estimate losses as PD × LGD × EAD, adjusted for macroeconomic scenarios, and assign each exposure to Stage 1, 2 or 3 based on whether credit risk has increased significantly. Indian NBFCs and lenders that follow Ind AS already use this framework, and the Reserve Bank of India has been moving scheduled commercial banks toward ECL-based provisioning. That shift explains why SBI is hiring for this skill.

Your Work ExperienceLikely to Count?Reason
Building or recalibrating PD, LGD or EAD models for ECL in a bank or NBFC risk departmentYesMatches the job profile directly
Designing SICR triggers or Stage 1/2/3 staging frameworksYesNamed in the job profile
Macroeconomic overlay or forward-looking scenario models for provisioningYesNamed in the job profile
Independent model validation or back-testing of ECL modelsLikely yesValidation is a listed duty; the certificate must say "ECL"
Ind AS 109 / IFRS 9 ECL advisory at a consulting firm's risk practiceLikely yes"Risk Advisory in Consulting Firm" is a named employer type
Rating-agency default-study or PD calibration workPossiblyRating agencies are eligible, but the work must be tied to ECL modelling
Statutory audit of ECL provisions as an auditorDoubtfulReviewing provisions is not the same as modelling them
Credit appraisal, underwriting or collections analyticsNoNot ECL modelling
Market risk (VaR) or liquidity risk modelling onlyNoDifferent risk discipline
Internship, articleship, teaching or trainingNoExplicitly excluded by the notice
Any ECL work before the qualifying degreeNoOnly post-qualification experience counts

The "Likely" and "Doubtful" ratings above are our editorial reading of the notice's wording. SBI's shortlisting committee makes the final call.

Biggest Rejection Risk: SBI says your experience certificate must specifically state that you worked in the required field. A certificate that only says "Manager, Risk Analytics, 2022–2026" does not prove ECL modelling. Ask your HR department now for a certificate that names ECL, PD/LGD/EAD or provisioning models, with dates. HR teams can take a week or more, and the window closes on 23 November.

8. Age Limit, Birth-Date Window and Relaxation

You must be between 25 and 35 years old as on 31 October 2026. That means a general-category candidate must have been born between 1 November 1990 and 31 October 2001, both dates inclusive.

The notice prints a standard relaxation table. Because all three vacancies are Unreserved, though, how much of it you can actually use depends on your category. The table below converts each relaxation into a birth-date window. The minimum-age cut-off of 31 October 2001 does not change for anyone.

CategoryRelaxation (as printed)Upper AgeBorn On or AfterApplies in This Recruitment?
General / UR / EWS–351 November 1990Yes (baseline)
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)3 years381 November 1987Doubtful — no OBC seat
SC / ST5 years401 November 1985Doubtful — no SC/ST seat
PwBD (UR / EWS)10 years451 November 1980Yes, for the VI seat
PwBD (OBC)13 years481 November 1977Seek clarification
PwBD (SC / ST)15 years501 November 1975Seek clarification

Why we flag OBC and SC/ST relaxation as doubtful: SBI's notice says reserved-category candidates for whom no reservation is mentioned may apply against UR vacancies "provided they fulfil all the eligibility criteria applicable to Unreserved Category." Under Government of India practice, candidates applying against unreserved vacancies do not usually get caste-based age relaxation. Since this notice has no SC, ST or OBC vacancies, the safe reading is that OBC, SC and ST candidates must meet the UR upper limit of 35. The one category that clearly benefits is PwBD, because a VI seat is reserved. The fee exemption for SC, ST and PwBD candidates does still apply, since the fee rule is written separately.

Note: Relaxations are not cumulative. If you are 36 to 40 and from a reserved category, raise the question through SBI's official query link before paying the fee, and keep a copy of the reply. Do not rely on an age-limit summary that lists the full relaxation table without this context.

9. Salary: The MMGS-II Pay Scale Decoded

A Risk Specialist joins at a basic pay of ₹64,820 per month in the MMGS-II scale, which rises to ₹93,960 through 11 annual increments. On top of basic pay come Dearness Allowance, HRA, CCA, Provident Fund, the NPS contributory pension, Leave Fare Concession, medical facilities and other perquisites under SBI's salary structure.

Pay Structure

Starting Basic Pay
₹64,820 PM
Maximum Basic Pay
₹93,960 PM
Pay Stages
12 (11 increments)
Pension
NPS (Contributory)

The notice prints the scale as 64820-2340/1-67160-2680/10-93960. Read it this way: start at ₹64,820, add one increment of ₹2,340 to reach ₹67,160, then add ten increments of ₹2,680 to reach ₹93,960. The full stage ladder is below.

StageIncrement AddedBasic Pay (₹ per month)
1 (entry)–64,820
22,34067,160
32,68069,840
42,68072,520
52,68075,200
62,68077,880
72,68080,560
82,68083,240
92,68085,920
102,68088,600
112,68091,280
12 (maximum)2,68093,960

Bank DA for officers is linked to the consumer price index and revised quarterly, and HRA and CCA depend on the city. Mumbai is in the highest bracket. Your gross monthly pay at entry will therefore be well above the ₹64,820 basic. Check a recent MMGS-II pay slip or SBI's circulars for current rates rather than relying on a fixed figure. Unlike a market CTC, this package also carries job security, the bank's staff loan concessions and a defined career ladder.

Pension Note: Officers joining now are covered by the National Pension System (NPS), a contributory scheme, not the old defined-benefit pension. Factor this in when comparing the offer with your current private-sector package.

For lateral hires from consultancies or private banks, compare total compensation, not basic pay. MMGS-II pay is a pay-scale package, not a negotiated CTC, and it can be lower than senior modelling roles in the private sector even though it offers more stability.

10. Application Fee and Payment Rules

General, EWS and OBC candidates pay a non-refundable ₹750 as application fee and intimation charges. SC, ST and PwBD candidates pay nothing. Payment is online only, through the gateway built into the application.

CategoryFeePayment Mode
General / EWS / OBC₹750Debit card, credit card, internet banking
SC / ST / PwBDNilNo payment required
  • Gateway transaction charges, if any, are paid by the candidate.
  • Once you pay, you cannot edit the application, so check every field before paying.
  • If the payment fails, try again. You can reprint the e-receipt and application form later.
  • The fee is not refunded or carried over to any other recruitment, including if SBI cancels the process.
  • If you submit more than one application, only the last completed one is kept and fees paid on the others are forfeited.

11. Selection Process: Shortlisting and a 100-Mark Interview

Selection has two stages, shortlisting and an interview carrying 100 marks. The final merit list is based on interview marks only. There is no written test, group discussion or physical test. If candidates tie at the cut-off, the older candidate is ranked higher.

1
Screening and Shortlisting

A committee set up by SBI decides the shortlisting parameters and calls an adequate number of candidates. Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee an interview call. Shortlisting is provisional and done without verifying documents.

2
Interview Call Letter

The call letter is posted on SBI's website or emailed. No hard copy is sent, so keep your email and mobile number active.

3
Document Verification at Interview

Original documents are checked when you report. A candidate found ineligible on age, qualification or experience is not interviewed and gets no travel reimbursement.

4
Interview (100 Marks)

SBI sets the qualifying marks. Your interview score is the only number that decides your rank.

5
Merit List and Wait List

Candidates are ranked by interview marks in descending order, with ties broken by age (older first). A category-wise wait list is valid for one year or until the next advertisement for the post.

6
Pre-Joining Formalities

The offer depends on medical fitness, reference checks, antecedent and police verification, and a relieving certificate from your current employer. You then serve probation under SBI's policy.

To see what the shortlisting committee is likely to look at, how the 100-mark interview is typically structured for SCO posts, and how the wait list works in practice, read our SBI Risk Specialist Selection Process 2026 guide.

12. Interview Preparation Map Built From the Job Profile

Because the interview alone decides the merit list, the best preparation is to work through each duty in SBI's job profile and KRAs and be ready to describe a model you personally built for it. The table below turns the official job profile into likely discussion areas. The question themes are our editorial assessment of what a technical panel would reasonably probe.

Job Profile / KRA ItemWhat the Panel May ProbeEvidence to Prepare
PD, LGD and EAD model developmentSegmentation, variable selection, logistic regression vs machine learning, through-the-cycle vs point-in-time PDOne model end-to-end: data, method, performance metrics (Gini, KS)

Pro Tip: Specialist interview panels at public sector banks usually include a domain expert and a senior HR or general-management member. Prepare a two-minute plain-language version of your best model for the non-specialist, and a detailed version for the domain expert. Also be ready for "why SBI and why now", since many applicants will be leaving higher-paying private roles.

13. How to Apply Online: Step-by-Step

You apply only online, through the link for advertisement CRPD/SCO/2026-27/27 on SBI's Current Openings page, between 2 and 23 November 2026. No hard copy is to be posted. Click Apply Online and fill in your details. When you save, the system generates a provisional registration number and password. Note them down. You can reopen and edit a saved application only three times.

4
Upload Photo, Signature and Documents

Use the separate upload link for each document and click Preview to check each one. Documents cannot be changed once submitted.

5
Review and Submit

Below are the most commonly asked questions about this recruitment. If your question is not answered here, refer to the official notification or raise it through the SBI careers query link.

SBI Risk Specialist Recruitment 2026 — 3 Vacancies Apply Online

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

SBI has notified 3 regular vacancies for Risk Specialist in the MMGS-II grade under Advt. No. CRPD/SCO/2026-27/27. All 3 are Unreserved, and 1 of them is horizontally reserved for a Visually Impaired (PwBD-VI) candidate.

Online registration and fee payment are open from 2 November 2026 to 23 November 2026. Registration is complete only after the fee is paid, so finish both before the last date.

You need any one of these as on 31 October 2026: CA, CFA, or an MBA/PGDM in Finance, Data Analytics or Business Analytics from a recognized institute. FRM (GARP) or PRM (PRMIA) is preferred but not mandatory.

You need at least 2 years of post-qualification experience in ECL-related modelling, such as PD, LGD and EAD models, SICR triggers or staging, in a bank, financial institution, rating agency, brokerage or the risk advisory practice of a consulting firm. Internships, articleship, teaching and training do not count.

Yes. SBI says the experience certificate must specifically show that you worked in the required field. A generic designation such as Risk Analyst may not be enough, so ask your employer for a letter that names ECL or PD/LGD/EAD modelling work with dates.

The age limit is 25 to 35 years as on 31 October 2026, meaning born between 1 November 1990 and 31 October 2001. Since all vacancies are Unreserved, OBC/SC/ST age relaxation may not apply; PwBD candidates can use the PwBD relaxation for the reserved VI seat. Confirm with SBI if you depend on relaxation.

Basic pay starts at ₹64,820 per month and rises to ₹93,960 (one increment of ₹2,340, then ten of ₹2,680). DA, HRA, CCA, PF, NPS, LFC and medical benefits are paid on top, so gross pay is well above the basic.

No. Selection is by shortlisting and a 100-mark interview. The merit list is based on interview marks only, and ties at the cut-off are broken in favour of the older candidate.

The fee is ₹750 for General, EWS and OBC candidates. SC, ST and PwBD candidates pay no fee. Payment is online only and is non-refundable.

The suggested place of posting is Mumbai, but it is only indicative. SBI can post selected officers anywhere in India or depute them to its associates and subsidiaries.

No. This advertisement (CRPD/SCO/2026-27/27) is for ECL credit-risk modelling. The Manager (Risk Specialist – Climate Risk) post was a separate, earlier advertisement (CRPD/SCO/2025-26/24) with different experience requirements.

Shortlisted outstation candidates get economy airfare up to ₹10,000 (round trip) or the actual cost, whichever is lower, on submitting tickets and boarding passes. Local transport is not reimbursed, and candidates found ineligible get nothing. Govt/PSU employees must bring an NOC.
